Peppermint

There is no mistaking the scent of this oil.  It is one of the scents that makes me think of holidays and winter months.  Peppermint is one of the two most used essential oils in the United States, the other being Lavender.  That is for good reason; it is one of the most versatile oils there is.

Peppermint is actually a hybrid of water mint and spearmint.  That doesn’t mean it is a new plant.  It was first described in 1753. It is a perennial plant that spreads by sending out runners.  One drop of peppermint oil is equal to 27 cups of peppermint tea.  So let’s talk about the benefits of this oil.

Do you find yourself dragging with the dreaded mid-afternoon slump?  Peppermint is a great choice.  The scent of peppermint can be used to promote a sense of alertness.  All you need to do is smell the oil straight out of the bottle.  I keep a bottle of peppermint in the top drawer of my office desk.

Do you run hot?  I find rooms warm even when everyone else thinks the rooms are a little chilly.  Peppermint has a cooling effect on your skin.  It is a great way to beat the summer heat.  That same cooling effect can also be used post workout.

Peppermint is also great to cook with.  A great addition to brownies to get a nice minty flavor. Add a few drops of peppermint to a vinaigrette to compliment your zesty greens.  In addition, peppermint is great for promoting your digestive system.
